Digital x-rays, also known as digital radiographs, are administered during an annual exam to allow a better view of your teeth and gums. They allow general and cosmetic dentist Dr. Natalie Scarmato to diagnose problems that are not visible, and to learn about the health of your teeth, jawbone, and gums. There are numerous dental and oral problems that can be seen on digital x-rays such as tooth decay, cavities, cysts, abscesses, bone loss, and impactions. When these problems are found early, they can be treated more efficiently with more treatment options. During your annual dental exam at her office in New York, NY, DEXIS digital x-rays will help Dr. Scarmato more accurately diagnose and treat oral health issues. Dr. Scarmato also uses a digital Panorex machine for full-mouth images if she suspects a problem with your gums or jaw. The Panorex can also help Dr. Scarmato plan before oral surgery, implant placement, or an orthodontic treatment.
"The best dentist I've had"- P.S. / Google / Mar 07, 2019
"Natalie and her team are so pleasant to visit I wish I could visit more often. Awesome bed side manor and super talented hygienists who really give it their all. Her white filling work is beautiful and she’s always very clear and informative about what you need done and why. I don’t ever feel like she’s doing anything for the money like I have with past dentists. I recommend her to anyone looking for a dentist."- G.Z. / Google / Sep 22, 2019

In general, digital x-rays are a part of a routine dental exam. They can be administered as a preventive measure or if you are experiencing dental issues of any kind. Panorex full-mouth images may be recommended to help Dr. Scarmato identify deeper conditions in your gums or jaw. The digital Panorex machine is also used before oral surgery, implant placement, and orthodontic treatments. Though digital x-rays use less radiation than traditional x-rays, Natalie Scarmato, D.D.S. prefers to minimize the amount of exposure that is delivered to every patient. While they are typically safe for any patient, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should tell Dr. Scarmato at the beginning of the exam so that extra precautions can be taken.
What to Expect
Typically done at the beginning of a dental cleaning or exam, digital x-rays take about 5 – 10 minutes to complete. Most patients will have a series of x-rays taken to include all areas of the mouth. After they are taken, they are uploaded and can be viewed by you and Dr. Scarmato during your appointment. She will be able to assess if there are any abnormalities and discuss what treatments may be needed.
A series of digital x-rays will typically be taken once a year at your annual dental exam. During some visits, a whole mouth series may be taken to get a comprehensive view of the teeth, gums, and jawbone. Your digital x-rays will be kept with your file so Dr. Scarmato can watch for changes over time and chart any areas of concern.
Typically, a dental insurance plan will cover the cost of digital x-rays as part of a routine dental exam. Our office will contact your insurance provider to determine any costs. For any out-of-pocket expenses or if you don't have dental insurance, Natalie Scarmato, D.D.S. accepts many payment methods and we can help you find medical financing.
