Once your orthodontic treatment is complete, you will move to a retainer to maintain your results. Your retainer will protect the investment you made in time and money during your orthodontic treatment by keeping your teeth in their new position while your gums and jaw stabilize. To serve the needs of our many patients, general and cosmetic dentist Dr. Natalie Scarmato offers a fixed retainer to her patients in New York, NY. A fixed retainer cannot be taken out of the mouth and is bonded to the back of the teeth on one or both arches. This means you won't have to worry about losing your retainer or special cleaning so it's easier to enjoy your beautiful new smile after Invisalign. To learn more about fixed retainers, schedule an appointment with Dr. Scarmato at her office in Greenwich Village.
Retainers are recommended for all patients as soon as they finish an orthodontic treatment. Even though your teeth are in their new position, a retainer helps to hold them there while the rest of your mouth adjusts. A retainer is ideal for younger patients who are still waiting for all their permanent teeth to develop and while their jawbone is still growing.
What to Expect
Once your braces are removed from your teeth, you can receive your fixed retainer. Dr. Scarmato will place a thin wire along the back of your top and/or bottom teeth, which will be affixed with a special bonding material. Once the retainer is secure, Dr. Scarmato will make sure that it is smooth against your teeth so it doesn't cut or poke your tongue. The fixed retainer has many advantages over removable retainers since it cannot be lost and does not require any special care or cleaning.
How long you have to wear your retainer will vary. It's usually recommended to wear your retainer until all your permanent teeth have come in and when your jaw is done growing (generally in the early to mid 20s). You should keep your fixed retainer clean with twice daily brushing and flossing. Dr. Scarmato will assess the condition of your retainer during your appointments and she may need to add more bonding material if it wears away. When your teeth are ready, Dr. Scarmato will dissolve the bonding material and remove the retainer wire.
A retainer may be included as part of your orthodontic treatment. During your consultation, Dr. Scarmato will let you know if there is an extra cost for your retainer. She will also go over your retainer options and cost estimates. If you have dental insurance, we will contact your provider to determine if any of your cost is covered, and then calculate your out-of-pocket costs. Natalie Scarmato, D.D.S. accepts many payment methods, including low-interest medical financing.
